| Supervisors Message:
Dear Beekman
Friends and Neighbors;
Welcome to the
Town of Beekman! Our Town's name came from Henry Beekman. The Town of Beekman was broken off from a much larger
tract of land that he had acquired and in 1788 became one of the
original towns of Dutchess County when New York State was divided
into Counties and Towns. Our town is comprised of three hamlets;
Poughquag, Beekmanville and Green Haven, each with it's own personality
and history.
As your Supervisor,
I head a Town Board, which is responsible for all phases of our
Town government. We have many different departments, each with it's
own department head, that handle the day-to-day activities of town
business.
In addition
to our regular Town Hall business hours of Monday through Friday
9AM to 4PM, our Town Clerk's office and the Supervisor's office
are also open on the second and fourth Saturday of each month from
9 AM to 12 PM during the months of September through June. Our Town
Clerk sponsors an annual rabies clinic, usually held in the fall,
and she also plans our annual Memorial Day celebration, which includes
a parade through Poughquag. My office, with the help of our Celebration's
Committee and Recreation Department, plans and conducts our annual
Community Day, held in July at our Recreation Center. It's a full
day of activities and a good opportunity to meet your neighbors
and local businesses, enjoy good food, music and a fireworks display
at dusk.
Beekman has
recently added a full time Recreation Director to oversee our ever-expanding
recreation department. In addition to all our regular summer camp
activities the Recreation Department also sponsors an annual Christmas
party for our children, several senior citizen trips during the
course of the year, and many other fun-filled activities held at
the Rec. Center. Watch for the events flier, which is mailed to
all residents in the spring and fall.
During the course
of the next year Beekman has many projects we will be following
up on. Our new Town Center will be designed and planned for the
future. We hope to begin using our new Town Center fields this coming
spring. Our library hopes to finish construction of their long awaited
new home. We await the addition to our highway garage, with a bay
designed to house our community ambulance service. We must address
the issue of smart growth, designed to plan for the future and at
the same time try to maintain our open spaces. As our town grows,
so does the demand for services. We must attempt to provide these
services at a reasonable cost while still striving to maintain our
current tax rate.
We have our
work cut out for us, but with a Town Board working in harmony and
our team of dedicated Town employees we hope we can meet your needs
and expectations of what you would like Beekman to be.
Hopefully you
will find this web site useful in your search for answers to questions
you may have. All of our Town Departments are listed here with explanations
of the services they provide along with loads of other information
you may find useful. We hope to add more information and news to
this site often to assist you. In the meantime, if I can be of any
help to you, please stop by Town Hall to see me or feel free to
call me anytime at 724-5300 ext. 239 or drop me an email at jadams@townofbeekman.com.
Thank you.
