The Beekman Highway Department is responsible for the continued maintenance, repair, and construction of our Town roads. We work to ensure that Beekman’s roads are safe and can handle traffic. Depending on the time of year, this may include plowing, sanding, street sweeping, and removing dangerous brush. In addition, Beekman Highway Department is also involved with various construction projects taken on by the Town. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or to report a concern.

Mailbox Policy

The role of snowplow drivers is to clear the snow and ice off Town roads.  In the course of plowing, we do receive phone calls regarding damage to mailboxes, either from snow plows directly or from the force of the snow being thrown by the plows.  Please know this is not done intentionally but is the unfortunate consequence of snow removal.  Highway crews cannot control the weight and the amount of snow being plowed.  Heavy wet snow is more likely to cause damage to mailboxes, especially ones that are in need of repair/maintenance.

It must be pointed out that there is no statutory or legal authority which grants a property owner or resident any right to place a mailbox in the Town’s Right-of-Way.  Mailboxes are placed within the Town’s Right-of-Way as a courtesy to the property owner and the United States Postal Service.  No Town, County or State is responsible for any damage caused to mailboxes in the regular course of snow removal.

If your mailbox sustains any damage after a snowstorm, please call the office.  We will send a crew out to evaluate the damage.  If your post is rotted out or screws are rusted, we will not repair your mailbox.  It is the homeowner’s responsibility to maintain and replace their mailbox when necessary.  Please call us at 845-724-5300 ext. 210 and we will do our best to rectify the situation.
